MAKING AN ENTRANCE BY DESIGN

That small or big space near your front door could be the most important room in your home — it is up to the design in the main entryway to be able to ground as well as guide positive energy through the entire home.

In Feng Shui the main entrance is very important if not the most important. For those who are not familiar with Feng Shui it is derived from an ancient poem that talks about human life being connected and slowing with the environment around it. Hence the translation of Feng Shui – wind and water.

Feng Shui is something we gladly stand behind and agree with. There is a lot more we can write about on Feng Shui, Tao and how it is related to the spaces we live in…but we will spare you (the ones who want to know more don’t hesitate to send us an email, Darya will love to continue the discussion, which will come up again in future posts).

Now, let’s not lose focus on what this blog post is really about - Making an Entrance! It is the first room/space that welcomes your guests as well as yourself and sets a tone for the rest of the home.

Simultaneously it is a high-traffic space that needs to resist umbrellas, muddy boots and anything else that is hauled in and provides a place to store that equipment.

So, how do you make the most of the entrance you have?

1.    Create a calm and inviting feeling

Storage is key here, having a shelf for keys, hooks for jackets, bench for bags and cubbies for shoes will come a long way both in the design and practicality of the space. For those with smaller entrances we suggest to Outline the floor. Add a rug or have different flooring in a small outlined square inside the front door to make this stylish as well as a functional spot - add hooks to hold jackets and bags and make room to stash shoes and boots.

2.   Visual impact meets functionality

A formula to use to achieve this is to have a mirror, it can be used to see yourself before you fly out the door and also serves to expand the space optically. Make a big statement by using wallpaper or give character by using an art piece. Center the ceiling with a fun light fixture. Create a focal point in your entryway by introducing a console table that will also host your keys, mail, and maybe a table lamp.

3.   Multipurpose Entrance

For the entryways with a little more room your console table can be a desk and can be used as a mini-office (especially nowadays where wfh is the new norm and not much traffic is going on in your front door – we hope!)

 4.   Go bold or go home!
You are already home so just go bold – paint your door with a pop of bold color, it will certainly brighten up an entryway (especially the tiny ones).
Note in small, modern apartments this is a great way to create dramatic visual impact to offset the rest of the home.
