A BIG IMPACT TO THE BEDROOM WITHOUT THE BIG EXPENSE.
If there is nothing else you do for your bedroom design, intentionally choosing your bedding will make a world of a difference both physically as well as aesthetically!
Continue reading for the how’s of absolute essentials needed for a great night’s sleep in your dream bed.
Sleep has tremendous impact on our health and general well-being. Achieving a good night’s sleep starts with our bed and most importantly our pillow. Our pillow is our supporter all through the night and should be chosen wisely.
Things to consider: firmness of the pillow, the composition (natural fibers such as cotton work best due to better breathability than polyester), the filling, and finally the pillow needs to fit properly in the pillow case. The pillow case should be made of breathable fabrics and be soft.
Now your sheets play a big part as well on how well you sleep. Making sure your sheets are of high-quality that keep you warm during cool nights and cool during the warm summer nights are a must. Again, the focus should be on the raw material and we suggest using Egyptian cotton.
Now that you have the base right, we can build on it. So, what are the bedding layers used to design your bed? There is definitely not one size fits all rule book for bed design however, if you follow these steps you will determine what style best fits your bedroom. First off is knowing the theme of your bedroom are you going for a minimalist style, eclectic, bohemian, vintage…
Now that your style is determined you can run with it. The best part of your bedding layers is that it is not permanent, and it is one of the easiest things to change.
Let’s get into the different layers that make your bed beautiful.
Layer 1: Fitted sheet
Make sure the sheet you choose is the perfect size, so it straps on to your bed flawlessly.
Layer 2: Flat Sheet (for us the basic ingredient)
This is the sheet that is sandwiched in between your flat sheet (layer 1) and your duvet cover (layer 3). It is also the sheet some skip having, even though it is definitely an essential one to have not to say the most essential. Many may think why would I create more work when making the bed but really those 5 extra seconds are definitely worth it.
Firstly, this is an important piece that contributes to a magazine worthy bed style. Most importantly though, this is the layer that will make the difference between mediocre sleep and amazing sleep. How you ask?
For the aesthetic component it is quite simple the way the flat sheet layers over the duvet allows it to become the focal point of the bed, as you can imagine without it, makes no sense.
For the physiological effect it has to do with temperature changes. If the weather decides to throw a frenzy and it gets too hot you would probably have to stick one foot out (those who have slept without a flat sheet know exactly what we are talking about) then your foot gets cold and goes back in and this cycle can continue throughout the night. How are you ever going to achieve REM at this stride? The flat sheet (highly recommend Egyptian cotton) can always be used on warm nights, cold nights, any nights no need to play the hide and seek game with your foot. The duvet cover on warm nights can be taken off completely and you will be sleeping as comfortably as possible.
Layer 3: Duvet Cover/Insert
For the duvet the most important part is the insert used. This is something that is personal and mainly depends on the temperature of the room you like to sleep in. When choosing the insert make sure to discuss it over with the seller to make the right choice for you. The duvet cover on the other hand gives endless opportunities to style your bed. You can have a year-round cover, change the cover every season, holiday or even according to moods. It is definitely an effective way to change the style of your bed easily and inexpensively.
By the way, having a flat sheet allows for an option of a less expensive duvet cover (as it is not directly touching you) and less need of washing the duvet cover as it has contact with only the top part of your flat sheet. Do we need to give any more reasons for why a flat sheet is a must? I think not.
Layer 4: The Throwover
This is the piece that gives you the Instagram flair. You need to throw it and let it land on the bed as it pleases, it makes your bed look effortless!
If you want a set place for it, we usually place it folded at the foot of the bed or center of the bed (where the flat sheet folds over the duvet).
This is the playful layer because it is the one you can go most wild with, obviously keeping within the colour theme but it can be in any material, pattern, colour your heart and budget desire.
Bonus: apart from the aesthetic factor the throwover comes in handy for when you want to read a book or lay on your bed during after-bed hours there is no need to undo the bed, you can have the throwover to keep you warm and throw it over the bed once you get up. This is what we call practicality.
Layer 5: Pillows
How many pillows do I really need on my bed? A question we are often asked. The simple answer is as many as you like.
The designer answer is a bit different. Pillows add dimension and depth to a finished bed. To best have the effects we are looking for we arrange them in the following way starting from the headboard: Euro, standard, and sham. The piece we optionally consider depending on different factors is the bolster.
There, you have your pillow 101 at the tips of your fingers.
Layer 6: Bed Skirt
Our final layer is best used to optimize space under the bed hiding what you are storing. It also holds up a vintage and cottage theme really well.
As you can read there are a few layers to consider for your bedding and each of them have a purpose and are not only created as a style statement.
Your choices have to be based on both functionality and aesthetics. Determine your theme, your habits, the occupants and dress the bed around it.
Now you have all the knowledge needed to customize and create an oasis retreat – a carefree zone where you can escape the day’s busy rhythm.
