How to setup your mudroom with 7 basic steps.

The drop-zone for everything that comes in and out of the house is?

Yes, the mudroom.

Regardless of the size we all have that landing spot where we dump jackets, shoes, bags, keys, ummmm pretty much everything! Now, are you ready to dig in and find out how important this dump everything area is? More so, how important it is to set it up right.

Clutter in the brain is no bueno and nor is it for the visual. Having an attractive mudroom is key to setting the aesthetic of your home. No matter what type of space you’re dealing with, this one is for you!

So, here are things we have learned along the way that we want to share with you that can help you plan, organize, and design your dream mudroom:

GET ORGANIZED!

First, things first, you need to make a storage plan – each space has a purpose, and everything needs a designated place for it. This is applied regardless of your mudroom is a transitional space between your garage and kitchen, or if it is only the entryway of your home. It needs to be functional and clean.

Bonus: You have to remember, the key is that there is a place for everything and everything has to be in its place.

DOORMATS

We always suggest using doormats on both the outside and inside of the door, it is the best way to stop dirt from getting into the indoors. There are many welcoming, fun, and creative one’s out there. Here is one we really like.

ADD PLENTY OF HOOKS + BASKETS

Hooks and baskets are super flexible you can use them for many different items. The hooks can be used for bags, scarves, coats, hats, etc. Baskets are as versatile, they can be used for shoes, toys, pet needs, and everything in between. You want your mudroom to hold all the gear that never makes it past your front door.

Bonus: For big families think about giving labeled baskets to each person for their own designated space.

HIDE IT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

This is definitely the perfect solution for small space dwellers. If you have a cabinet or closet that you can spare, and have it function as a drop-spot for all the things that come in and out of the house you are on to a bigger change than you can imagine.

Bonus: This cabinet/closet can also be used for brooms, dusters, and cleaning products that are usually ugly, - you’re welcome!

OR HIDE IT BEHIND CURTAINS

Is a cabinet or a closet not an option for you? Don’t worry curtains are here to take all the clutter out of sight, out of mind. You can hang fabric panels to hide away the coats, shoes, tools, and whatever else it is that you don’t want to see.  At the same time, you will add softness and warmth to your space.

PAINT WITH A STRATEGIC COLOUR

If painting is an option a dark colour for your storage unit can camouflage all the things you plan on storing in it. We find a dark navy always does the trick.

Bonus: Here is a big secret, this is our most popular paint colour that we love and also works great for this purpose.

SKIP FURNITURE

As long as you have wall space, you can make a mudroom. Put some baskets on the ground, add some hooks horizontally to the mid-wall, add a slab of wood, and ta da!

Bonus: You can add cubbies above your hooks to fully use the wall and have even more storage space.

Your mudroom/entrance is the first thing you see when you walk into your home, so it needs to make a strong first impression and it obviously needs to be super functional. If you combine what you have read here with  our previous blog – making an entrance by design you will do that and much more!

The weekend is here so get to it - organize, plan, and design your mudroom.
